Latest NewsSenate Votes Down SB152PSNH Statement – Senate vote on SB152 (April 8, 2009) We are pleased that the Senate today voted to defeat SB152, a bill that sought to re-examine and possibly halt a state-mandated environmental project currently underway at PSNH’s Merrimack Station in Bow, NH. This vote is an affirmation of the Legislature’s commitment to its 2006 mandate to significantly reduce emissions of mercury from PSNH’s power plants. Cutting emissions at PSNH’s largest power plant is a critical step forward toward achieving New Hampshire’s goal of providing cleaner energy. The Clean Air Project will make Merrimack Station one of the cleanest coal plants in the nation, and it will create or preserve hundreds of local jobs at a time marked by economic uncertainty and volatile energy markets. PSNH looks forward to completing the scrubber installation at Merrimack Station, while at the same time working with other stakeholders in New Hampshire to pursue a range of additional clean energy initiatives. With SB152 behind us, we look forward to focusing our attention and resources on collaborative efforts with the State and others to develop more significant sources of carbon-free or low-carbon energy, such as solar energy projects, the expansion of energy-efficiency programs, the importation of Canadian hydro-electric power, and the development of other renewable energy sources. PSNH is proud to have the highest percentage of renewable energy (17%) of any major utility in New England, and we remain focused on building even greater clean energy sources for New Hampshire. - e n d - << Back to Latest News |
